Eating Too Much Fat on Keto: Why It Stalls Weight Loss
Summary: Your body uses the fat you eat before it touches the fat you store, so once you are past the first month, extra dietary fat can stop weight loss even when carbs stay low.

The short answer
Low carbs get you into ketosis. They do not make calories disappear. If you eat as much fat as your body burns in a day, it has no reason to use stored fat.
KetoDick on this: In a video titled "Eating too much fat on keto for weight loss", he tells people trying to lose weight to stop "pushing the fats" (from the video). His view is that in the weight-loss phase your extra fat should come from your body, not your plate (video NUJNFG6lLWw).
Dietary fat is burned first
Think of two fuel tanks. One is the food you just ate. The other is the fat stored on your body. Your body draws from the food first.
KetoDick says the same thing in plain terms: in the weight-loss phase, the body runs on its own fat, and there is "almost unlimited" fat available for ketosis once you are adapted (from the video). He shows how much stored fat even a small, lean person carries: 10 lb at 10% body fat for a 100 lb person, about 35,000 calories (video NUJNFG6lLWw).
Controlled studies support the idea that fat calories still count:
- In a metabolic ward, 19 adults lost more body fat per day when calories were cut from fat (89 ± 6 g/day) than when calories were cut from carbs (53 ± 6 g/day) (Hall et al., 2015).
- When 17 men switched to a ketogenic diet at the same calories, energy use rose by only about 57 kcal a day, and body-fat loss slowed after the switch (Hall et al., 2016).
Both studies were short and done in a lab setting. They do not show that keto fails. They show that ketosis does not cancel extra fat calories.
Where his view and the research line up, and where they differ
KetoDick agrees calories matter. His line is "calorie deficit matters but calorie restriction is not advisable" (from the video): eat until full, and let falling hunger create the deficit (video 8Jk5ShSUpFY). He links that falling hunger to lower insulin. The ward studies above measured fat loss and energy use, not hunger, so they neither confirm nor rule out his insulin explanation. See Energy Balance on Keto.
Signs you may be eating too much fat
Too much fat is a likely cause of a stall when most of these are true:
- You are past roughly week five.
- Your carbs are steady under your limit.
- You are not hungry between meals, but you eat fat anyway to "hit macros".
- Your weight and measurements have not moved for several weeks.
KetoDick's test is similar: past week five, not hungry during the day, and frustrated by the scale (video NUJNFG6lLWw).
First, make sure it is a real stall and not normal water swings. See Stall vs Fluctuation.
Where the extra fat usually hides
| Source | Why it adds up |
|---|---|
| Daily bulletproof coffee | KetoDick puts it at 400–500 calories, about 40% of a 1,300 calorie day (video cTGYIFOTPl8) |
| Fat bombs | Mostly coconut oil, butter or cream cheese; he names them as empty calories (video cTGYIFOTPl8) and says to eat real food instead of spending much on them (video xyEZL0HuejI) |
| Mayonnaise and dressings | Easy to pour, rarely measured; he says he worries about how much mayo he eats (video cTGYIFOTPl8) |
| Butter or oil added on top | A tablespoon or two at every meal adds up fast |
| Heavy cream in several coffees | Small pours, many times a day |
KetoDick names empty-calorie fat as his "biggest concern" (from the video) with how people do keto (video cTGYIFOTPl8). He also warns that chasing fat can crowd out leafy greens and herbs. More in Hidden Calories and Bulletproof Coffee.
Cut fat, not protein
When you need to eat less, take it from fat.
Protein does a different job. It helps keep muscle while you lose weight and helps you feel full. A review of 24 trials with 1,063 people found that higher-protein, calorie-reduced diets gave modestly more weight and fat loss and less loss of lean mass (Wycherley et al., 2012). Raising protein from 15% to 30% of calories led people to eat 441 fewer calories a day on their own (Weigle et al., 2005).
KetoDick makes the same call: protein is based on lean mass, which does not change when hunger drops, so the calories you skip should come from fat (video 8Jk5ShSUpFY). See How Much Protein on Keto? and Protein and Fullness.
How to cut fat without being hungry
- Confirm the stall. Several weeks with no change in weight or measurements, carbs steady.
- Drop the add-ons first. Bulletproof coffee, fat bombs and extra pours of oil or butter go before real food.
- Cut about 20–30 g of fat a day. That is 180–270 calories. KetoDick calls this a reasonable amount to try (video NUJNFG6lLWw).
- Keep protein the same. Lean meats, eggs and fish keep you full.
- Keep vegetables in. Leafy greens add volume and nutrients for few calories.
- Give it a few weeks. Then check again.
- Eat if you are hungry. KetoDick says he does not encourage anyone on keto to go to bed hungry (video NUJNFG6lLWw).

When not to cut fat
- In the first month. Your body is still adapting. KetoDick calls cutting fat or calories in month one "kind of cruel" (from the video), because people will feel tired and run down (video NUJNFG6lLWw). See Fat Adaptation.
- When you are truly hungry. Fat is there to fill real hunger. Eat.
- In maintenance. At goal weight, fat goes back up, not down. See How Much Fat Should You Eat on Keto?.
- If you take diabetes medication. Eating less on top of low carbs can change how your medication works. Talk to your doctor before you cut. See Medications and Keto.
- If you have an eating-disorder history. Cutting and counting can feed restriction. Involve your care team. See Keto and Eating Disorders.
