How Many Carbs a Day on Keto? 20 g, 25 g or 50 g
Most people reach ketosis under 50 g of carbohydrate a day and some need to stay under 20 g, so 20 g is the cautious starting line and 50 g is the outer edge.

The three numbers at a glance
| Daily carbs | Who it suits | Main trade-off | Where KetoDick uses it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 20 g | Starting out, wanting the surest ketosis | Hard to fit enough fiber | Video s_sNd1v8Low, video ffwBPoKxlDI |
| About 25 g | People eating plenty of leafy greens | Needs some tracking | Video 1vyxuWlxT5M |
| Under 50 g total | Beginners who want one simple rule | Some people will not stay in ketosis | Video UygKGoP_BtA, video xyEZL0HuejI |
All three count grams of carbohydrate per day. Whether you count total or net carbs changes what each number means; see Net Carbs vs Total Carbs.
20 g: the cautious start
Under 20 g is the number most keto sources repeat. The reason is simple: some people need to be that low to stay in ketosis, so 20 g works for nearly everyone (video ffwBPoKxlDI).
KetoDick gives under 20 g to start, with some people tolerating up to 50 g, in his explainer on what keto is (video s_sNd1v8Low).
The cost of 20 g is fiber. Reference bodies set fiber for women at about 21 to 25 g a day (NASEM 2005). Fiber sits inside total carbohydrate, so a 20 g total-carb day cannot also hold 25 g of fiber. More in Fiber on Keto.
Where 20 g comes from
None of the reference bodies on this guide's evidence pages sets 20 g as a rule. The American Diabetes Association's 2019 consensus report says reducing total carbohydrate has the most evidence for improving blood sugar, and treats low-carb eating as one of several options, without one gram target for everyone (doi.org/10.2337/dci19-0014).
KetoDick on this: He reads 20 g as a study protocol, a fixed number researchers use so a trial is consistent, not a line that fits every body. He asks for the source behind the same 20 g for a 6-foot active man over 200 lb and a 90 lb woman (video 1vyxuWlxT5M). The blog post why 20 grams of carbs covers this further.
25 g: room for bulk vegetables
The 25 g number comes from one idea: spend carbs on vegetables. Lettuce, arugula and spinach are almost all carbohydrate by label, but a large bowl carries few grams and a lot of volume, fiber, vitamin A, calcium and magnesium (video 1vyxuWlxT5M).
KetoDick on this: He says he would be comfortable with 25 g a day if 5 g of it comes from bulk vegetables, and to go easy on fruit (video 1vyxuWlxT5M). He objects to treating the 20 g budget as room for keto desserts or a few chips; his phrase, from the video, is "spend your carbs wisely."
50 g: the simple beginner rule
Under 50 g a day is the broad definition of a ketogenic diet (video ffwBPoKxlDI). It is easier to follow than 20 g, and easier to follow is the point.
KetoDick on this: In his 2018 beginner video, his rule is under 50 g of total carbs, almost all from green vegetables (video UygKGoP_BtA). In a 2017 Q&A he puts it more bluntly for confused beginners: keep carbs under 50 "and nothing else matters," ideally 20 (video xyEZL0HuejI). His reasoning is adherence: every extra rule makes a diet harder to keep (video UygKGoP_BtA).
Note the word total. 50 g total and 50 g net are not the same diet. 50 g net can be much more food than 50 g total.
Does body size change the number?
Probably, but no source in this guide gives a formula by body weight for carbs.
What the sources do show:
- Fiber references scale with calories: 14 g per 1,000 kcal (NASEM 2005). A smaller person eating fewer calories has a smaller fiber reference.
- KetoDick says he usually quotes figures for men, though most of his audience is women, and suggests scaling down by about 25 to 35% (video 1vyxuWlxT5M). That is his rule of thumb, not a published one.
- Activity matters. He describes a heavy, active man and a small woman getting the same limit as the oddity he wants explained (video 1vyxuWlxT5M). Carbs for hard training are covered in Carbs for Hard Workouts.
How to find your own line
- Start low. Begin at or under 20 g total, or taper down to it over a week or two (see Tapering into keto). KetoDick describes a taper from about 100 g down to 20 g (video 1vyxuWlxT5M).
- Fill the budget with greens first. Add other foods after the vegetables are in.
- Track for a few weeks. Use weekly averages, not single days (video UygKGoP_BtA). See Tracking in month one.
- Wait out fat adaptation. He gives three to five weeks before a higher-carb vegetable day stops mattering much (video 1vyxuWlxT5M). See Fat Adaptation.
- Raise slowly if you want to. Add a few grams at a time and watch how you feel, your hunger and, if you test, your ketones (see Testing for Ketosis).
- Stop where it still works. The right number is the highest one that keeps your hunger down and your results moving.
KetoDick on this: Once fat adapted, he says an occasional 50 to 100 g day built around a big salad is "nutrient loading," not cheating, and his glycogen arithmetic says one such day cannot undo adaptation, though several days in a row can (video 1vyxuWlxT5M). When the number matters for your health
- Diabetes medication, especially insulin: dropping from a typical diet to 20 g can change blood sugar within days. KetoDick says his own blood sugar went from near-diabetic to near-normal in about a month (video xyEZL0HuejI). Ask your doctor about doses before you start (see medications).
- Eating-disorder history: a hard daily gram limit is a lot of counting. KetoDick says anyone with an eating disorder should involve a therapist and doctor (video xyEZL0HuejI). See Keto and eating disorders.
